Letter from the Chairman
On November 10th, we are holding
our Annual General Meeting in Mitcheldean Library at
2.30 where we shall give account of ourselves over the
last year.
You will have an opportunity to meet
and to question your Executive Committee members and
to vote for the members for the following year.
You may also nominate someone to
the Committee or be nominated yourself if you would
like to take part in the Constituency's work.
New blood is always needed and welcome
and in any case I should like to see you at the meeting.
Mike German, Leader of the Liberal-Democrats
in the Welsh Assembly, has accepted our invitation to
speak after the business - you will find he will prove
to be a very entertaining speaker.
Finally, we need money to fight our
corner in local and future elections: I appeal to you
to make any donation you can to build our fighting funds.
Tom Wilcox, our Hon Treasurer will
be glad to advise you of ways of making regular payments,
if you are able.
L. John Holman.
Getting our message across
We need to keep in touch with the
electorate all year round, not just at elections. Other
Lib Dem groups do this with a regular "newspaper",
usually called a Focus. It’s difficult to manage this
in a rural constituency like ours but we want to make
a start. We need to build up a list of people who are
prepared to deliver perhaps 50 newsletters, no more
than four times a year.
Could you help?
Forum on Forest Transport
On a cold evening in September a
group of Lib Dems met in Coleford to discuss transport
problems in the Forest of Dean. The meeting started
with a fascinating talk by Andre Curtis, a member of
Friends of the Earth, who had come over from Cheltenham
to address us. His talk was followed by a lively discussion
on what is, and isn’t, feasible in this area.
We reached the conclusion that the
most promising possibility was a "wibbly bus"
– one that doesn’t follow a set route, but which "wibbles"
about collecting passengers at pre-arranged stops. It
has the disadvantage that passengers need to book in
advance, but would be more useful and less expensive
to operate than the present routes, with their empty
buses.
Garden Party
This was a great success, despite
the weather! Our thanks go to John and Joan who provided
the venue and did much of the work.
Photos of this event will appear
in a future issue of the newsletter.
